Jabber

Jabber is an open instant-messaging protocol. Popular jabber clients include:

  • Gaim (apt-get install gaim) GTK2
  • cabber (apt-get install cabber) Console
  • Kopete KDE

The EDOS Jabber server

The Jabber server for the EDOS project is conference.edos-project.org Your Jabber client should allow you to automatically register at the server. It is maintained by Vincent Balat.

Using Gaim

  1. register a new account:
    • select "Jabber" as "Protocol:"
    • enter "edos-project.org" as "Server:"
    • give a self-describing "Screen Name", such as "xyzzy" or "mkdir" ;-)
    • fill a "Password"
    • check "Remember password" if you want
    • check "Auto-login" if you want to connect automatically each time you launch Gaim
A new dialog should open saying "If you are a member of the edos project, please choose a username and password to register with this server", with already filled-in "Username:", "Password". Fill in "Name" and "E-Mail" if you want (this info will be visible to other users if they ask for 'info' about your account when you are connected)

If everything works fine, a "Registration successfull" notification should appear.

You can now sign-on using this account. A "Conversation" window should open, with the "edos-project.org" tab opened and a message saying:

(2006-09-07 15:13:32) edos-project.org: Welcome to the Jabber server -- we hope you enjoy this service! For information about how to use Jabber, visit the Jabber User's Guide at http://jabbermanual.jabberstudio.org/

Now, go to "Tools" menu in the small window listing contacts and select "Room List" menu item. A window "Room List" appears, press "Get List" button, a dialog opens asking "Enter a Conference Server". The text field is probably already filled in with server "conference.edos-project.org", if yes leave it as is, if not enter this server name. Then press button "Find Rooms".

You should see a list containing 4 rooms, namely wp5, icfp, wp2 and wp3. Select "wp3" for instance and press "Join" button. A new tab should appear in the conversation window, with tab name "wp3@conference.edos-project.org". You are connected. Welcome!

You can then add the conversation room to your contact list: go to the conversation window, select tab "wp3@conference.edos-project.org", press button "Add" (at bottom of window); a dialog "Add Chat" should appear, with already filled-in text fields. Pressing "Add" button should add it to your contacts.

Using Gaim 1.5.1, debian package : strangely, you won't be able to connect to the room until you shutdows/restart the software

Using Kopete:

  • to register an account, the server to be used is "edos-project.org"
  • Then to join a chat room, use "conference.edos-project.org".

Chat rooms

  • wp2 : Chat room for WP2
  • wp5 : Chat room for WP5
  • wp3 : Chat room for WP3
  • create your own chat rooms!
