Tutorials and Introductions for Developers

• New Maintainer's Guide is a gentle walk through the various steps of building a debian package.
• Packaging tutorial is another beginners' tutorial on building packages.
• Diagram of the Debian Process. This diagram is still under discussion in the debian project.
• Debian _testing_ distribution. This document explains the passage of packages from the _unstable_ distribution to the _testing_ distribution.
• Maintainer Scripts. These are the scripts contained in a debian package which are run at the various

phases of installation, removal, or upgrade of a package. This very useful site explains the various states a package can go through on a debian system.

Reference Texts

• Debian Policy Manual describes the policy requirements for the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. This includes the structure and contents of the Debian archive and several design issues of the operating system, as well as technical requirements that each package must satisfy to be included in the distribution.
• File System Standard describes the file system layout that Debian adheres to.
• Developer's Reference describes the procedures to be followed by Debian developpers

Debian Infrastructure

• Bug Tracking System is the publicly accessible data base of known bugs
• Autobuilders recompile automatically newly uploaded packages for different architectures. There is some documentation about the autobuilder network, and a data base about the state of compilation of the packages.
• Debian Snapshot provides historical snapshots of the debian archives, and gives access to older versions of packages superseded in the current distributions.
